Toward an objective scale of agency in digital experience

01/2017

This project explores the relevancy of electrophysiological markers of agency, that is our ability to feel as author of our actions. It involves several measurement devices to gather data for :
– Heart Rate Variability
– Electrodermal activity
– Pupil diameter
– Fine movement analysis

In this protocole, a pianist is playing an easy piece of music on a professional digital piano. While playing and without getting the participant informed, the behaviour of the piano is slowly downgraded to the point that the participant realises that something is going wrong.

The main challenge is to identify behavioural (movement) and electrophysiological markers of the adaptation to the changes in the piano behaviour before the participant realises that the piano is not properly working.

This project needs deeper analyses but preliminary results already showed interesting patterns in the pupil diameter evolution throughout the different parts of the music piece.
